NOTES
Cardigan is worked from cuff to cuff. Front and neck bands are picked up and knit last.
First Sleeve
Beginning at cuff edge of first sleeve, cast on 12 sts.
Beginning with a wrong side row, work in St st (knit on right side, purl on wrong side) for 5 (5, 3, 3) rows.
Increase Row (right side):
K1, knit into front and back of next st (kfb), knit to last st, kfb, k1—14 sts.
Repeat last 6 (6, 4, 4) rows 1 (2, 3, 4) more times—16 (18, 20, 22) sts.
Work even in St st until piece measures 6 (7, 8, 9)” (15 (18, 20.5, 23) cm) from beginning; end with a wrong side row. Make note of the number of rows worked after the last increase row.
CARDIGAN
Body
Rows 1 and 2 (body cast-on):
Cast on 12 (14, 16, 18) sts, work in St st to end of row—40 (46, 52, 58) sts at the end of Row 2.
Work even in St st until body measures 2 (2½, 3, 3½)” (5 (6.5, 7.5, 9) cm) from body cast-on; end with a wrong side row.
Next Row (right side):
Bind off 20 (23, 26, 29) sts, knit to end of row—20 (23, 26, 29) sts remain for back.
Work even in St st over remaining back sts only until back measures 8 (8½, 9, 9½)” (20.5 (21.5, 23, 24) cm) from body cast-on edge; end with a wrong side row.
Next Row (right side):
Cast on 20 (23, 26, 29) sts for front, knit to end of row—40 (46, 52, 58) sts.
Work even in St st over all sts until back measures 10 (11, 12, 13)” (25.5 (28, 30.5, 33) cm) from body cast-on; end with a right side row.
Next 2 Rows:
Bind off 12 (14, 16, 18) sts, work in St st to end of row—16 (18, 20, 22) sts remain.
Second Sleeve
Work even in St st for same number of rows as noted at end of first sleeve.
Decrease Row (right side):
K1, k2tog, knit to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1—14 (16, 18, 20) sts.
Work even in St st for 5 (5, 3, 3) rows.
Repeat last 6 (6, 4, 4) rows 1 (2, 3, 4) more times—12 sts remain.
Work even in St st until second sleeve measures same as first sleeve. Bind off.
Fold piece and sew side and sleeve seams.
Front and Neck Bands
With right side facing, beginning at lower right corner, pick up and k20 (23, 26, 29) sts up right front edge, 13 sts across back neck edge, and 20 (23, 26, 29) down left front edge—53 (59, 65, 71) sts.
Row 1 (wrong side):
P1, *k1, p1; repeat from * to end of row.
Row 2: K1, *p1, k1; repeat from * to end of row.
Repeat last 2 rows until bands measure 2” (5 cm); end with a wrong side row.
Buttonhole Row (right side):
[K1, p1] 4 (4, 5, 6) times, k1, yo, k2tog, *p1, k1; repeat from * to end of row.
Repeat Rows 1 and 2 for 1” (2.5 cm). Bind off loosely.
Sew button to left front, opposite buttonhole. Fold collar back to form shawl collar. Weave in ends.
