Girl's Stockinette Skirt

Knitting Needle Size8 or 5 mm, Circular Knitting Needles, Double-Pointed Knitting Needles (DPNs)
Yarn Weight(4) Medium Weight/Worsted Weight and Aran (16-20 stitches to 4 inches)

- Susan Bates® Circular Knitting Needles: 5mm [US 8] 29” long.
- Susan Bates® Double-Pointed Needles: One set 5mm [US 8]
- Yarn needle
- Stitch marker
- 2 /3 yd. of ¾” [2 cm] wide elastic for waistband
- Sewing needle and matching thread
GAUGE: 18 sts = 4” [10 cm]; 23 rows = 4” [10 cm] in Stockinette St.
CHECK YOUR GAUGE. Use any size needle to obtain the gauge.
Directions are for size 2. Change for sizes (4, 6, 8) in parentheses.
Finished waist: 21 (22, 23, 24)” 53 [56, 58, 61 cm].
NOTES
Skirt is worked in the round from the hem to the waistband.
Skirt has 8 pleats with an elastic waistband. Elastic waistband is sewn into a casing at the waistline.
The purl stitch on the skirt automatically forms a fold line for the inside edge of the pleat.
Pleat Instructions
Slip 5 sts from left needle to double-pointed needle. Slip next 3 sts to second double-pointed needle. Fold fabric to form the letter "Z" with the 3 needles. K2tog, (1 st from front double-pointed needle, 1 st from left circular needle) k3tog (1 st from each needle), 3 times, k2tog (1 st from front double-pointed needle, 1 st from left circular needle).
SKIRT
With circular needles, cast on 164 (168, 176, 184) sts. Join to work in the round being careful not to twist sts. Place stitch marker between first and last st to mark beginning / end of rounds, slip marker every round.
Rounds 1-6: K2, p2 around.
Next Rounds: *P1, k19 (20, 21, 22), p1, k20 (20, 21, 22)*. Work from ** in rounds for 5 (7.5, 9, 11.75)” 8 [19, 23, 30 cm].
Next Round: PLEAT Round.
Count 8 sts at beginning of new round, *PLEAT, k8 (8, 8, 9), PLEAT, k7 (8, 9, 9)*. Work from ** to end of round.
Next Rounds: Continue working in rounds and knit for 4 (4.5, 5, 6)” 10 [11, 13, 15 cm] — 100 (104, 112, 120) sts.
Next Round: Bind off all sts.
FINISHING
Turn skirt inside out.
Cut a length of elastic 21 (21.5, 22.5, 23.5)” 53 [55, 57, 60] or to waist measurement.
Overlap ends of elastic 1” [2.5 cm], with sewing needle and thread, stitch ends together to form a circle. Place elastic circle inside the waistband of skirt. Fold casing over elastic and stitch casing to body of skirt covering the elastic. Knot thread and fasten securely. Turn skirt right side out. Trim excess thread, weave in ends and lightly block pleats.
