- RED HEART® Super Saver® 1 skein 964 Primary A
- RED HEART® Super Saver® 1 skein 319 Cherry Red B
- Susan Bates® Straight Knitting Needles: 5mm [US 8]
- Susan Bates® Crochet Hook: 5.5mm [US I-9]
- Yarn needle
Gauge: 16 sts and 20 rows = 4” (10cm).
Measurements: 6” wide x 26” long (15 x 66cm)
Abbreviations:
- A, B, C, etc. = Color A, B, C, etc.
- ch = chain
- k = knit
- k2tog = knit two stitches together
- p = purl
- ssk = slip, slip, knit
- st(s) = stitch (es)
- [ ] = work directions in brackets the number of times specified
- * = repeat whatever follows the * as indicated
Instructions:
With B, cast on 48 sts.
Row 1 (right side): Purl.
Row 2: Knit. Repeat last 2 rows once. Change to A.
Row 5: Purl.
Row 6: Knit. Repeat last 2 rows until piece measures 18” (46cm) from beginning, ending with a wrong side row.
Right Heel
Join B and work over first 12 sts only.
Row 1 (right side): Purl.
Row 2: Slip 1, knit to end. Repeat last 2 rows 6 times more.
Short rows: P2, p2tog, p1, turn; slip 1, k3, turn; p3, p2tog, p1, turn; slip 1, k4, turn; p4, p2tog, p1, turn; slip 1, k5, turn; p5, p2tog, p1, turn; slip 1, k6, turn; p6, p2tog. Cut B. Slip all remaining sts to right needle.
Left Heel
Join B and work over first 12 sts only.
Row 1 (wrong side): Knit.
Row 2: Slip 1, purl to end. Repeat last 2 rows 6 times more.
Short rows: K2, ssk, k1, turn; slip 1, p3, turn; k3, ssk, k1, turn; slip 1, p4, turn; k4, ssk, k1, turn; slip 1, p5, turn; k5, ssk, k1, turn; slip 1, p6, turn; k6, ssk. Cut B. Slip all remaining sts to left needle.
Foot
Next row (wrong side): With A, k7, pick up and knit 7 sts on inside edge of Left Heel, k24 across instep, pick up and knit 7 sts along inside edge of Right Heel, k7—52 sts.
Next row: Purl.
Next row: K17, k2tog, k14, ssk, k17—50 sts.
Next row: Purl.
Next row: K16, k2tog, k14, ssk, k16—48 sts.
Next row: Purl.
Next row: K15, k2tog, k14, ssk, k15—46 sts.
Next row: Purl.
Next row: K14, k2tog, k14, ssk, k14—44 sts.
Next row: Purl.
Next row: K13, k2tog, k14, ssk, k13—42 sts.
Next row: Purl.
Next row: Knit. Repeat last 2 rows until Foot measures 6” (15cm), ending with a wrong side row.
Toe
Row 1 (right side): With B, purl to end.
Row 2: [K5, k2tog] 6 times—36 sts.
Row 3: Purl.
Row 4: [K4, k2tog] 6 times—30 sts.
Row 5: Purl.
Row 6: [K3, k2tog] 6 times—24 sts.
Row 7: Purl.
Row 8: [K2, k2tog] 6 times—18 sts.
Row 9: Purl.
Row 10: [K1, k2tog] 6 times—12 sts.
Draw yarn through remaining sts, pull tight and secure.
Finishing
Sew sole and back seam. With crochet hook and B, ch 10, slip st to first ch to make a loop, fasten off. Attach loop to top of stocking.

Although this is meant for Christmas, this pattern shows you don't have to stick to red, green, and white for your decor. You can use up the worsted weight yarn you have on hand, or use any lovely colors like royal blue, dark purple or green. You could also embellish it with embroidered or appliqued snowflakes or ornaments.

This truly is a festive stocking with so many possibilities a decoration for the front door (with gifts sticking out of it or perhaps greenery) hanging for Santa to fill a decoration in a window instead of a wreath -- you can think of many more I know.
