Vintage Hat

    • A: 2 skeins of La Boheme from Fiesta yarns (strand A 64% brushed kid mohair, 28% wool, 8% nylon; strand B 100% rayon boucle; 4 oz; 165 yds), color 11294

    • B: 1 ball of Kid Merino from Crystal Palace Yarns (28% kid mohair, 28% merino wool, 44% micro nylon; 25 g; 240 yds), color 204


  • Needles: US 10 (6 mm) circular (16" to 20") and US 10 doublepointed, or size required to obtain gauge, and US 15 (10 mm) straight for CO only
  • Stitch marker
  • Tapestry needle
  • Head form

Rep rows 1 and 2.

(Multiple of 6 sts)
All rows: *P3, K3; rep from * to end of row.

Hat

Using size 15 needle and 1 strand each of A and B held tog, CO 72 sts using decorative cast-on method.

Change to size 10 circular needle.

Work in seed st for 4 rows.

Work in 3 x 3 ribbing for 4 rows.

PM and join into rnd. Cont working in 3 x 3 ribbing until hat measures 5".

  1. Crown Shaping

    Work decs as follows, changing to dpns when necessary.

    Rnd 1: *P1, P2tog, K3; rep from * to end of rnd—60 sts.
    Rnd 2: *P2, K3; rep from * to end of rnd.
    Rnd 3: *P2tog, K3; rep from * to end of rnd—48 sts.
    Rnd 4: *P1, K3; rep from * to end of rnd.
    Rnd 5: *P1, K1, K2tog; rep from * to end of rnd—36 sts.
    Rnd 6: *P2tog, K1; rep from * to end of rnd—24 sts.
    Rnd 7: *K1, P1; rep from * to end of rnd.
    Rnd 8: *P1, K1; rep from * to end of rnd.
    Rnd 9: *P2tog, K2tog; rep from * to end of rnd—12 sts.
    Rnd 10: *K1, P1; rep from * to end of rnd.

    Pull yarn through rem 6 sts. Fasten securely.

  2. Tie

    Using size 10 needle and 1 strand each of A and B held tog, CO 3 sts.

    Border I
    Row 1: K1f&b, K1, K1f&b—5 sts.
    Rows 2, 4, and 6: Knit.
    Row 3: Sl 1 wyif, K1f&b, K1, K1f&b, K1tbl—7 sts.
    Row 5: Sl 1 wyif, K1f&b, K3, K1f&b, K1tbl—9 sts.

    Body
    Row 7: Sl 1 wyif, K7, K1tbl.
    Row 8: Sl 1 wyif, K2, P3, K2, K1tbl.
    Rep rows 7 and 8 until tie measures 73".

    Border II
    Row 1: Sl 1 wyif, K2tog, K3, K2tog, K1tbl—7 sts.
    Rows 2 and 4: Knit.
    Row 3: Sl 1 wyif, K2tog, K1, K2tog, K1tbl—5 sts.
    Row 5: K2tog, K1, K2tog—3 sts.

    BO all sts.

Finishing

Work in ends. Block hat and tie. Place hat on head form to dry. After drying, fold tie in half RS tog. Fold hat RS tog. Place the folded edge of the tie in the opening at the bottom of the hat and sew through all 4 layers using 2 strands of Kid Merino held tog. This secures the tie and closes the seam. Block seam.
