One of the best things about being a knitter is the sense of community that comes with interacting with other people just as obsessed with yarn and sheep as you are. Communities can act together to create a powerful sense of support and change in the world. The Johnny’s Socks Kit is a wonderful example of how the knitting community can band together to support awareness for heart health. Knitters have all sorts of different reasons for casting on a new project, and some of these reasons can be incredibly altruistic ones. In my experience, knitters are an incredibly charitable group. It’s not surprising that the Johnny’s Socks Kits have already raised over $20,000.
The Johnny’s Socks Kit is part of an initiative started by Rosemary “Chappy” Chapman, after her son unexpectedly died of a heart attack at the age of 41. In an effort to raise awareness of the prevalence of heart disease, Chappy teamed up with Skacel to create the Johnny’s Sock Kit. Knitters who purchase this $25 kit are directly supporting the Genesis Heart Institute. Thanks to the generous donations by Skacel, the entire cost of the kit is directly donated. Purchasing a Johnny’s Socks Kit is a fantastic way for knitters to both support and raise awareness for heart disease.
The Johnny’s Socks Kits have a very thoughtful design. The socks themselves have three different heart-related bands built into the pattern: the Artery Band, the Broken Heart Band, and the EKG Band. Each of these bands represents a different fact about heart disease. These kits support an important cause that affects millions of people every year.
