Nimble Fingers on the Prairie
About Nimble Fingers on the Prairie:
For the past fifteen years, I provided knit items for an area mitten tree but was astonished to find out this past year that their efforts were being discontinued due to budget constraints. I remember the drive home after talking with them and then asking what one person could do to remedy that situation; so I picked up the phone.
After just a few phone calls to other knitters I knew and contacting area organizations who could be distributing to the needy in the area without adding any additional costs to their own efforts, Nimble Fingers on the Prairie was formed. I was pleasantly surprised to find how many friends, strangers and local businesses were eager to help with our efforts in whatever fashion they could.
Our main goal is to solicit volunteer knitters and those who crochet to create the hats, scarves and mittens. In order to help provide those who have the skill but perhaps not the funding for their own supplies, we also seek donations of new yarn, needles and other tools for knitting or crochet. We have a secure website connection for cash donations for anyone who would like to help but are not knitters which allow us to purchase yarn or new mittens to round out our supplies. Our website will also sell hand knit items made of luxury yarns in which all of the profits will go directly into our general fund.
Our on-line patterns are free and are directed toward beginner knitters. The majority of knitting designs are simple ribbing and garter stitch. These are only suggestions and we will accept any design our volunteers choose to create. Nimble Fingers on the Prairie’s main goal is to provide these children with warm, utilitarian garments to accommodate the harsh cold of our winter months.
