How to Knit Scrubbies

Learn how to knit scrubbies with this super easy knitting video tutorial! If you've never tried knitting a scrubby before, it's so much fun, and it's practical, too. They're basically washcloths that are knit with scrubby yarn and cotton yarn held together as one strand.
This knit scrubby pattern is very beginner-friendly, so anyone can give it a try! This pattern is also great if you're just getting used to knitting with two different types of yarn. By using both a cotton and scrubby yarn, you get the benefits of both -- the softness and density of the cotton and the grit and scrubbing power of the scrubby yarn.
This knit washcloth pattern is ideal if you want to exfoliate in the shower or use it as a rag that has a little bit of grit to it.
Knitting Needle Size8 or 5 mm
Yarn Weight(4) Medium Weight/Worsted Weight and Aran (16-20 stitches to 4 inches)
Materials List
- Knitting needles
- Scrubby yarn
- Cotton yarn
Instructions
-
Hold both strands of yarn together for the entire pattern.
CO 15-20 sts (depending on the desired size of your scrubby) -
Row 1: K across, knitting through both strands of yarn as one stitch

Row 2: K across, knitting through both strands of yarn as one stitch
-
Continue in garter stitch until your pattern is an even square.

Bind off and weave in your ends.

I have definitely seen my share of both knit and crochet scrubby patterns over the past few years and even more so lately with the popularity of the scrubby yarns from the major yarn companies. I have avoided making any since most incorporated nylon netting into the pattern and that was not no stick pan friendly.

I had not been interested in using Scrubby yarn since it is plastic. However, Red Heart now has Scrubby Cotton which is 100% cotton, which I like much better and is a little more eco-friendly. You could follow this same pattern but substitute the Scrubby Cotton doubled, or use it with plain cotton yarn.

You can never have too many scrubbies. For knitters like myself who always have to be knitting something, these are perfect and so useful. I like the addition of the cotton yarn. It makes it more durable. They work up quickly and they wash well. Thank you.

I have never used scrubby yarn if that's the name of it I usually call it the fuzzy yarn!! It always feels so soft and perfect for kids hand knit bits! is it hard to work with? I would imagine it is? I feel the bits at the edge would get caught?? Is there a trick to using it?

What you are talking about and scrubbie yarn are not the same thing. The scrubbie yarn is made of hard plastic material and is very hard on the hands to work with.

Ive made lots of scrubbies, and the yard was not hard to work with. It is scratchy. I enjoyed them, but can't find the yarn anymore.
