Notes
- Cardigan is worked in one piece from neck down to underarms. Piece is then divided for fronts, back, and sleeves.
- Body is worked from underarm down to lower edge. Sleeves are worked from underarm down to cuff, then seamed.
- Markers are used to separate front band stitches from Star Lace pattern. If desired, markers can be placed between repeats of the Star Lace pattern. Count stitches to ensure that there are the same number of stitches between markers.
- Hat is worked from top of hat down to lower edge.
- Star Lace pattern can be worked by reading chart or following written instructions. Read right side rows of chart from right to left, and wrong side rows from left to right. Repeat the pattern as many times as needed across each row.
Hat directions are for size 3–6 months. Changes for size 12–18 months are in parentheses.

This set is just so cute. I love the design stitched in at the top of the sweater and the top of the matching cap. There are a lot of directions that go along with the making of this set. I wish there were a few more instructional pictures to go along with this. This is definitely not for a beginner. I think starting with the cap would be the best way to get accustomed to the pattern stitching before tackling the sweater.

Could anyone post the number of stitches you should have at the end of increase rows of the star pattern, please? Thank you
Kristina K
Jun 11, 2018
hi tmcls4, at the end of row 1, you should have 6 stitches. At the end of row 5, you should have 8 stitches. At the end of row 9, you should have 10 stitches, and at the end of row 13, you should have 12 stitches. Every other increase row after that also contains the same number of decreases, so you'll stay at 12 stitches for the remainder of the star pattern. We hope this helps! -Editors of AllFreeKnitting

Thank you for your response. It helps somewhat but I was looking for the total number of stitches at the end of each row, not just the pattern increase.

You should ask your question on the red heart website, they have a new chat forum to ask yarn and pattern related questions. I'm certain one of the coaches over there will help you with this, they will not do it on this website. This website just hosts patterns from other websites, all relevant questions should be directed to the website that actually originates the patterns. Go to red heart.com, I'm certain they will help you.

Hi tmcls4, to access the printer-friendly version of this pattern, scroll down to the bottom of the pattern where you'll see large buttons for sharing to Pinterest, Twitter, etc. Click the bright blue button that says "More" and the button to print the project will show up. We hope this helps! -Editors of AllFreeKnitting

Just a suggestion - when there is an increase or decrease in a row it would really help to know how many stitches there should be when finished that row.

This is my first time knitting something like this set. Has anyone completed the hat? Having trouble getting the right of stitches where the pattern begins star lace pattern. Pattern says 31 stitches but I only end up with 30. Has anyone else completed this? Thanks

I have just started this sweater and I'm confused by the star lace pattern. For rows 4-7, it says to repeat last 2 rows 2 times, but in the actual pattern, rows 4-7 are different. Also same thing happens further down in instructions. Please help. Thank you

I have made this sweater a couple of times now and it always comes out great. You won't believe how quickly they knit up. Make it a little big so baby can wear it longer, the new mommy will thank you!

This little sweater is so pretty. I love the design of the yoke and am thinking of knitting the sweater in two different colors. A pretty lavender or sunny yellow for the yoke and a soft green for the body. It will look like a lovely flower.

I was so glad to find the written instructions for the lace section of this sweater. I tried to follow the charted directions from another site, knew I hadn't done it right so ripped everything apart and as I was looking for an alternate pattern, came across this one! I am using a dk weight yarn and smaller needles than called for in the pattern but it will be fine as I want this sweater for a baby who will be 6-8 weeks at Christmas time. I am only doing one button at the neck. Easier to get on and off, and easier to keep up with the pattern. Photo shows progress so far--just about ready to divide for sides and sleeves.

I am just starting this sweater. The first buttonhole is on Row 3 (wrong side) but the second buttonhole is indicated for Row 8 which is the right side and the opposite side to Row 3. Can you help me with this? I so badly want to make this sweater but now I have to rip out two rows and don't know which rows to put the buttonholes on. Thank you!

I am having trouble with this pattern. I am at Row 17 of the Star Lace Pattern .... maybe it is too near bedtime but there seems to be yo in rows 17, 19 & 21 which would suggest 'holes' which shouldn't be there. Can anyone throw some light on this for me please. Have you knitted it successfully?

Did you ever finish sweater? I found same problem but when I enlarged picture of sweater, I could see wholes on it at these rows. I think it needs to be knit pretty tightly over here. What did you do?

Thanks for sharing this pattern. I have seen it being sold in a catalogue as a kit but with all the yarn that I have stashed away I will be able to knit it. Thanks again.
