This would be a fun pattern to knit - and I like the idea of knitting it in a solid to have the checkerboard pattern stand out as suggested below gives one two patterns in stead of one!

I made several of these as Chrstmas gifts and they turned out great. In a solid color the checkerboard pattern really pops out. Easy to make, looks very lush.
