When I click through to the original post, I can see that the pattern does not require double pointed needles and two strands of yarn are used rather than bulky or super chunky yarn. Two strands would be interested because you can use two different colors. I love the texture of this and the unique look of a pillow with buttons.

This is a great pattern, nice texture and the buttons are a great addition. I think you could use a worsted weight 4 yarn held double if you didn't have a super bulky/super chunky yarn. Not sure why it says above to use DPNs because the pattern is knit flat on straight needles.
