Grandma's Knit Hat and Mittens

Free knit mitten patterns and ribbed knit hat patterns are best when they're kept simple. This Grandma's Knit Hat and Mittens set, called Grammy's Hats and Mittens Pattern on the Tanis site, are classic patterns that will never go out of style. Plus, they're easy. The mittens are knit mostly in the stockinette stitch with a nice ribbed edging. The ribbed hats are made to complement the mittens and do so very well. This pattern is great for both males and females and is a must-have for this winter.

Such a practical pattern for young and old alike. Just enough color change to make it interesting but not to busy. I will probably use a circular needle until I can't and then switch to the DP needles to finish it off. Can't have too many hats so lets get cracking.

This is my favorite hat pattern because I can whip it up in 2-3 hours working over 2 days. I've made lots of them. I use worsted, which is sometimes softer, or if it's winters are quite cold, I use denser yarn.

What is the difference between Medium Weight/Worsted Weight and regular Worsted?

#4 Medium is used for both worsted weight and aran weight. There isn't a medium and regular worsted weight as far as I have ever seen, although some worsted weight yarn is lighter than others.

I think this is such a classic hat and mitten pattern that everyone who knits hats should have it! It might sound crazy, but I love to make hats (ask my family) and I would really like to make this pattern... but the needle size is 4.5 mm. Can anyone tell me what size that is in American needle sizes? I see this all the time and I don't really know which is which, although I should have it memorized by now.

Size 7 American

You don't have to tell me twice because this is the right thing

Made this hat pattern twice. Love it. It knits up so quickly and the stripes are perfect. On to the mittens next!

I don't understand double-point needles. I don't see directions in the hat patter for even using them. Are they actually used in the hat pattern?

yes, they are, the pattern states rather clearly that it is knit in the round, so you would require dp's to achieve this pattern as written.

I have made this hat several times and love it! Have it in my head to make 2 more for my grandsons this winter, just got to get motivated and start them!

I would love to knit this but cannot access this pattern can u e-mail it to me please. Thank you

is it possible to knit these on 2 needles knit and purl? cheers, marilyn.

I made these with two needles since I'm just getting into knitting and do not have the right size circular needle. When finished I just left a long tail of yarn, ran it through the last stitches, sewed the ends together and weaved the end in. Came out nice. I made two of these though intending them for my 2 1/2 yr old and almost 4 yr old. The toddler size was way too small for them, would fit more like a 6 month old. The child size fit taught and only covers their ears if it is not folded up. Anyone else find that?

Certainly, the only thing knitting in the round will eliminate is the seam, so it could be knit flat and seamed when finished. hope this helps.

I love this, but cannot access pattern. Could you please email this to me?? Thank you
