Valentine Mug Hug

These cute little cozies will keep your loved ones' drinks nice and hot while keeping their fingers away from the burn. The Valentine Mug Hug features a beautiful knitted heart on one side, but the secret is that you don't have to know how to strand knit to cast on this easy knitting pattern. Both the cup cozy and the heart are worked separate with the heart sewn on in the end. Perfect for knitters of all skill levels, the Valentine Mug Hug is great practice while you're waiting to jump into the fray of long-term knitting projects.
Knitting Needle Size7 or 4.5 mm
Yarn Weight(4) Medium Weight/Worsted Weight and Aran (16-20 stitches to 4 inches)
Gauge1 stitches, 2 rows, 3 inches. stockinette stitch
Materials:
- RED HEART® With Love™ (Art. E400, available in solid color 7 oz (198 g), 390 yd (357 m) and multi-color 5 oz (141 g), 230 yd (211 m) skeins): 1 skein each 1303 Aran A and 1909 Hollyberry B
- Knitting Needles: 4.5mm [US 7]
- Yarn needle
- 1 wooden toggle button (1½” long)
GAUGE: 20 sts = 4”; 20 rows = 4” in pattern. CHECK YOUR GAUGE. Use any size needles to obtain the gauge.
Mug Hug fits mug 3” diameter on top, 2” diameter on bottom, 4” high.
Abbreviations:
A, B = color A, B
K = knit
mm = millimeters
P = purl
st(s) = stitch (es)
tog = together
[] = work directions in brackets the number of times specified
Instructions:
MUG HUG
Begin at bottom edge with A, cast on 32 sts.
Rows 1-6: [K2, P2] 8 times.
Row 7: [K1, Knit in front and back of next st, P2] 8 times – 40 sts.
Row 8: [K2, P3] 8 times.
Row 9: [K3, P2] 8 times.
Rows 10-15: Repeat Rows 8 and 9.
Row 16: Repeat Row 9.
Rows 17 and 18: Knit.
Button Loop: Bind off 39 sts, (one st left on needle) cast on 14 more sts – 15 sts. Bind off. Sew strip into a loop at top. Sew button in place on opposite edge.
HEART
With B cast on 10 sts.
Row 1: Knit.
Row 2: Purl.
Row 3: Knit in front and back of first st, K8, Knit in front and back of last st – 12 sts.
Row 4: Purl.
Row 5: Knit.
Row 6: Purl.
Row 7: K4, [K2tog] twice, K4 – 10 sts.
Row 8: Purl.
Row 9: K3, [K2tog] twice, K3 – 8 sts.
Row 10: Purl.
Row 11: K2, [K2tog] twice, K2 – 6 sts.
Row 12: Purl.
Row 13: K1, [K2tog] twice, K1 – 4 sts.
Row 14: Purl.
Row 15: [K2tog] twice – 2 sts.
Row 16: P2tog. Fasten off.
FINISHING
To shape top of heart, attach a length of yarn at center top. With yarn in yarn needle, weave down through fabric for 4 rows, gathering and pulling tightly. Sew heart in place.

Easy to follow pattern and does not need much yarn, this would make an ideal last minute gift for a friend as it is quick to make and would fit snuggly over a plain coloured mug to brighten it up. The seperate heart motif is useful as you can use it for other projects as well as the mug hug.
