Note: When working from chart, wind small balls of the colors to be used, one for each separate area of color in the design. Start new colors at appropriate points. To change colors, twist the two colors around each other where they meet, on WS, to avoid a hole.
BACK
**With A and smaller needles cast on 53 (57-63-67-71) sts.
***1st row: (RS). K1. *P1. K1. Rep from * to end of row.
2nd row: With MC, P1. *K1. P1. Rep from * to end of row.
With MC, rep these 2 rows (K1. P1) ribbing for 2 ins [5 cm] ending on a 2nd row.
Next row: With A, knit.***
Next row: With A, as 2nd row inc 4 sts evenly across. 57 (61-67- 71-75) sts.** Break A.
Change to MC, larger needles and proceed in stocking st until Back from beg measures 17 (18- 20-22-24) ins [43 (45.5-51-56-61) cm], ending with RS facing for next row.
Shoulder shaping:
Cast off 9 (10- 11-12-12) sts beg next 2 rows, then 9 (10-11-12-13) sts beg following 2 rows. Leave rem 21 (21-23-23-25) sts on a st holder.
FRONT
Work from ** to ** as given for Back.
Hockey and Football Versions only: Change to MC, larger needles and work 0 (2-6-12-16) rows even in stocking st.
All Versions: Next row: With MC and larger needles, K8 (10-13-15- 17). Work 1st row of Chart I or II or III. With MC, knit to end of row.
Next row: With MC, P7 (9-12-14- 16). Work 2nd row of Chart I or II or III. With MC, purl to end of row. Chart I or II or III is now in position.
Cont working appropriate chart to end of chart, ending with RS facing for next row.
Cont even until Front from beg measures 14 (14-16-16-16) rows less than Back to beg of shoulder shaping, ending with RS facing for next row.
Neck shaping:
Next row: K24 (25-28-29-31) (neck edge). Turn.
Leave rem sts on a spare needle.
Dec 1 st at neck edge on next 6 (5-6-5-6) rows. 18 (20-22-24-25) sts.
Work 7 (8-9-10-9) rows even ending with RS facing for next row.
Shoulder shaping:
Cast off 9 (10-11-12-12) sts beg next row.
Work 1 row even. Cast off rem 9 (10-11-12-13) sts.
With RS of work facing slip next 9 (11-11-13-13) sts from spare needle onto a st holder. Join yarn to rem sts and knit to end of row.
Dec 1 st at neck edge on next 6 (5- 6-5-6) rows. 18 (20-22-24-25) sts.
Work 8 (9-10-11-10) rows even ending with WSfacing for next row.
Shoulder shaping:
Cast off 9 (10-11-12-12) sts beg next row.

SLEEVES
With A and smaller needles cast on 29 (31-31-33-35) sts.
Work from *** to *** as given for Back.
Next row: With A, as 2nd row inc 6 (6-8-10-10) sts evenly across. 35 (37-39-43-45) sts.
Change to MC, larger needles and proceed in stocking st inc 1 st each end of needle on 5th and following 4th rows to 53 (57- 65-69-71) sts.
Cont even until work from beg measures 11 (13½-15-16-17½) ins [28 (35-38-41-45) cm] ending with RS facing for next row. Cast off.
FINISHING
Pin garment pieces to measurements and cover with a damp cloth leaving to dry.
Neckband:
Sew right shoulder seam. With RS of work facing, A and smaller needles, pick up and knit 14 (14-16-16-16) sts down left front neck edge. K9 (11-11- 13-13) from front st holder. Pick up and knit 14 (14-16-16-16) sts up right front neck edge. K21 (21-23-23-25) from Back st holder dec 1 st in center. 57 (59- 65-67-69) sts.
Next row: With A, P1. *K1. P1. Rep from * to end of row. Break A.
Next row: With MC, knit.
With MC, beg and ending on a 2nd row, work 2½ (2½-3-3-3) ins [6 (6-8-8-8) cm] in (K1. P1) ribbing as given for Back. Cast off loosely in ribbing.
Sew left shoulder and neckband seam. Fold neckband in half to WS and sew loosely in position.
Place markers on front and back side edges 7 (7½-8½-9-9½) ins [18 (19-22-23-24) cm] down from shoulder seams. Sew in sleeves between markers. Sew side and sleeve seams.
Hockey and Football Versions only: With C embroider lines on face mask as illustrated.
