I was about to say the same thing as 3cats2love. You can work on this almost anywhere and not have to worry about stitch count or anything. For beginners, it's perfect for working on tension and the result is a very useful item. Variegated yarn will keep it more interesting and hide a few flaws, too.

I know this is called a beginner wash cloth but sometimes more experienced knitters want something that works up quickly without too much fuss. This pattern is just right for that. It looks great in solids or in self patterning yarn, you can take it with you places, and you can put it down and pick it up and not have to worry about where you left off!
