    Beginner

    Knitting Needle Size7 or 4.5 mm, Circular Knitting Needles, Double-Pointed Knitting Needles (DPNs)

    Yarn Weight(4) Medium Weight/Worsted Weight and Aran (16-20 stitches to 4 inches)

    Gauge16 sts = 4" (10 cm); 20 rounds = 4" (10 cm) in ribbing, slightly stretched. CHECK YOUR GAUGE. Use any size needles to obtain the gauge.

    Finished SizeFits most adults. Hat circumference (slightly stretched): 18” (45.7 cm)

    • Red Heart® Hopscotch™: 1 ball 7953 Waterslide
    • Susan Bates® Circular Knitting Needle: 4.5mm [US 7] 16” (40.6 cm)
    • Susan Bates® Double Pointed Needles: One set 4.5mm [US 7]
    • Stitch marker
    • Yarn needle

    Instructions

    Hat

    1. Cast on 80 sts. Join into the round, being careful not to twist sts, and place marker at beginning of round.

    2. Round 1: *Knit 2, purl 2; repeat from * to end.

    3. Work in Knit 2, Purl 2 ribbing until hat measures 10” (25 cm) from cast on.

    Shape Crown

    Note: Change to double pointed needles when work is too small for circular needle. 

    1. Round 1: *Knit 2, purl 2 together (dec 1 st); repeat from * to end – 60 sts.

    2. Rounds 2-4: *Knit 2, purl 1; repeat from * to end. 

    3. Round 5: *K2tog, purl 1; repeat from * to end – 40 sts.

    4. Round 6: *Knit 1, purl 1; repeat from * to end.

    5. Round 7: *K2tog; repeat from * to end – 20 sts.

    6. Round 8: Knit.

    7. Round 9: *K2tog; repeat from * to end – 10 sts.

    8. Cut yarn, leaving a long tail.

    Finishing

    1. With yarn needle, weave yarn through remaining sts; gather sts up firmly and secure. 

    2. To wear, fold brim up.
