Turtleneck Knit Poncho Pattern
This lovely knit poncho pattern is surprisingly simple to work!
Ponchos are always going in and out of fashion. Wouldn't it be nice to have a poncho that looks good no matter what the season? This Turtleneck Knit Poncho is one such poncho. The deep purple of this piece is flattering on just about anybody, and looks just as great with a pair of jeans as it does with leggings or stockings. This poncho will take a while to complete, but it's easy enough for most skill levels to manage, so there's no reason to not knit this pattern.
Knitting Needle Size5 or 3.75 mm, 6 or 4 mm, Circular Knitting Needles
Yarn Weight(3) Light/DK (21-24 stitches to 4 inches)
Gauge21 sts and 29 rows to 10 cm measured over st st using 4mm (US 6) needles.
Materials List
- One size Rowan Tweed Settle 598 23 x 50gm
- 1 short (60cm) 3 3/4mm (no 9) (US 5) circular needle
- 1 long (100cm) 3 3/4mm (no 9) (US 5) circular needle
- 1 long (100cm) 4mm (no 8) (US 6) circular needle
Pattern
Starting
Cast on 259 sts using long 3 3/4mm (US 5) circular needle.
Working backwards and forwards in rows, proceed as follows:
Row 1 (RS): K1, *P1, K1, rep from * to end.
This row forms moss st.
Work a further 13 rows in moss st, thus ending with a WS row.

Change to 4mm (US 6) circular needle.
Row 1 (RS): Patt 18 sts, K51, P1, K119, P1, K51, patt 18 sts.
Row 2: Patt 18 sts, P51, K1, P119, K1, P51, patt 18 sts.
Last 2 rows form patt.

Cont in patt as now set until front measures 68 cm, ending with a WS row.
Shape Neck
Next row (RS): Patt 116 sts and turn, leaving rem sts on a holder. Work each side of neck separately.
Cast off 4 sts at beg of next row. 112 sts.
Dec 1 st at neck edge on next 5 rows, then on foll 4 alt rows. 103 sts.
Work 6 rows, thus ending with a RS row.
Place markers at both ends of last row to denote shoulder/overarm point.
Cast on 4 sts at beg of next row. 107 sts.
Work 1 row, thus ending with a RS row.
Break yarn and leave sts on a holder.
With RS facing, rejoin yarn to rem sts, cast off centre 27 sts, patt to end. 116 sts.
Work 1 row.
Cast off 4 sts at beg of next row. 112 sts.
Dec 1 st at neck edge on next 5 rows, then on foll 4 alt rows. 103 sts.
Work 5 rows, thus ending with a RS row.
Place markers at both ends of last row to denote shoulder/overarm point.
Work 1 row.
Cast on 4 sts at beg of next row, thus ending with a RS row. 107 sts.
Join Sections
Next row (WS): Patt 107 sts on needle, turn and cast on 45 sts, then with WS facing patt across 107 sts left on holder. 259 sts. Cont in patt until work measures same from markers as from top of moss st border to markers, ending with a WS row. Change to long 3 3/4mm (US 5) circular needle. Work 14 rows in moss st. Cast off in patt.

Neck Border
With RS facing and using short 3 3/4 mm (US 5) circular needle, starting at left shoulder marker, pick up and knit 28 sts down left front neck, 28 sts across front neck, 28 sts up right front neck to right shoulder marker and 60 sts across back neck. 144 sts.
Working in rounds, proceed as follows:
Round 1 (RS): *K3, P3, rep from * to end.
Rep this round for 23 cm.
Cast off loosely in rib.

I dont understand the following "Change to 4mm (US 6) circular needle. Row 1 (RS) Patt 18 sts, K51, P1, K119, P1, K51, patt 18 sts. Row 2 Patt 18 sts, P51, K1, P119, K1, P51, patt 18 sts. Last 2 rows form patt." What i dont understand is the Patt 18 st. Please will you let me know

Patt 18 sts means that you will work the first 18 sts in the moss stitch, K1, P1, K1, this is to maintain the moss stitch borders all the way through the garment.

I did a Google search for the Rowan tweed yarn in the color Settle as specified but was not able to locate anyone that sells it. Does anyone know if that particular color was discontinued or if the entire line was discontinued? I found a couple of sites that sell Rowan felted tweed but not just the regular tweed.

I love this but the cost is rather prohibitive. The yarn is on sale online $14.19 us plus tax, plus shipping and handling, plus exchange this garment will cost over $500 to make. I must find a more cost effective substitute to make it.

Measure your work from the moss stitch border to where you placed the markers in the neck shaping section, the top of the moss stitch border is where you switched needles to where you placed markers in the neck shaping, these instructions ensure each side of the poncho come out the same length. It's alot easier to visualize than it is to explain. Basically, you're knitting up the front and down the back, only measure the work done with the larger needle to make everything accurate.

Not showing an actual number of yardage is my problem here too, and I would really like to knit this, especially since this yarn listed is out of production everywhere and we have to substitute. I find this alot of the time I want to work a pattern from the internet, the yarns are discontinued.

The yardage on this yarn was 129 yds. per skein, you need 23 so the total yardage would be 2,967 yds. dk weight yarn.

Ponchos are among my favorite clothing items to knit because they are very forgiving when it comes to fit. This one is very pretty and appears to be very warm. I'd like to try this pattern, but I am having trouble understanding the directions under the "shape neck" section. In particular, I don't understand how each side is worked separately. Has anyone made this?

So pretty! Definitely a big project but this poncho is so classic and versatile I know I'd be wearing it several months throughout the year, and it would never go out of style from year to year.

don't usually like shawl- or cape-type patterns, and ponchos fall into that category, but this one is different. I like it and have to knit it... As for the amount of yarn needed I have yet to see a ball of yarn/wool that does not include the number of yards included -- makes it easier to use a different yarn than the one called for (can't always find the exact yarn) Wish more patterns included the number of yards required - one ball or skein weighing 50 grams may not go as far as another

I would love to make this poncho but I'm also asking if it's available in American English. 2,300 yards sounds like a lot of yarn and what does foll mean?

I think that "then on foll 4 alt rows" means "then on the following 4 alternate rows"
