I think that one of the most intimidating things about knitting a sweater is the fit, and the fact that you can’t really know how your project is going to look on you until it is cast off and blocked.  Even though knitting a sweater can be a bit of a risk, there are things you can do to ensure that you end up with a fabulous sweater that fits you like a glove.  Amy Herzog’s Knit to Flatter is a premier guide that will help you navigate the sometimes murky waters of sweater construction.

Herzog starts with the basics, guiding you through the process of determining your body size and properly measuring your proportions.  I was happy to see that Herzog gets into the nitty-gritty details of body shape; though she ultimately sketches broad body shape categories, she draws attention to the different variations of body types, even within her categories.  To ensure that all readers can find the best fitting sweater she thoughtfully includes a chapter on pattern modifications.

Packed full of useful fitting and shaping information, Knit to Flatter is an excellent guide for any knitter looking for more information on sweater design and creation.  Besides getting a better idea of what type of sweater will look good on your particular body type, Herzog also provides several patterns aimed towards each category.  Anyone who has ever felt the heartbreak induced by an ill-fitting finished project will immediately see the value in this comprehensive and useful book.
