A cute hat for your little one, this does require you to be able to knit in the round on circular needles and use instarsia to change the colours when knitting the hearts, I am not the greatest at this but the basic shapes does enable you to practise using this technique. A lady at my knitting group has also made the hat and she knitted the hat in one colour and swiss darned the hearts on using a fluffy sparkle yarn. This made them stand out from the pink so could suit those that do not like colourwork.

This hat is quite cute, but it is not a beginner pattern. Beginner patterns should include basic knit and purl stitches, maybe simple color changes at the end of a row. This pattern includes intarsia and is worked in the round. This pattern is not terribly hard, but it will probably frustrate beginning knitters, although the author does link a help video.

Can't say I agree with you, the first thing I ever knit after I learned to read a pattern was the Mary Maxim jacket with the unicorn on the back for my daughter-it was a great experience and I've been hooked on intarsia ever since-I think this is a phenomenal pattern for beginners to sink their needles into and gain some serious skills! happy knitting..

Wow, I never could have knit anything like that when I was first starting out...I agree that beginners should try and spread their wings, and this patterns definitely includes a lot of useful skills for advancing in knitting. :-)

Here is the confusion The original pattern says it's for "advanced beginner." I think that might translate into an Intermediate, or at least an Easy on allfreeknitting. But it's very pretty and at least something a beginner could put on the list once they feel comfortable with basic knitting.
