I think there is an error in this pattern-it saids to CO 39sts, ist row k1,p1 across in applicable colour for each row and that this will be a "ribbed scarf" pattern, an odd number of stitches will give you seed stitch, not ribbing-I think there is an error in the amount to cast on, it has to be an even # of stitches to look like the picture.

You are correct, but if you read the comments below, you will find this was corrected to an even number of stitches. It would still be a ribbed stitch pattern if you knit the knits and purl the purls as they appear on the reverse side. I know this is late, hope it helps.
