Instructions
NOTE
Shawl is worked back and forth in rows. Circular needles are used to accommodate large number of stitches.
Shawl
Cast on 125 sts.
Row 1 (Wrong Side): K1, p1, knit to last 2 sts, p1, k1.
Repeat Row 1 nine times more.
Next Row (Wrong Side): K1, p1, begin St st with a p row and work to last 2 sts, p1, k1. Work even in pattern as established until piece measures 6" (15 cm) from beginning end by working a right side row.
Next Row (Garter Ridge): K1, p1, knit to last 2 sts, p1, k1.
Keeping first and last 2 sts in pattern as established, continue even in St st until piece measures 8" (20 cm) from beginning end by working a right side row.
Repeat Garter Ridge Row 3 times.
Continue even in St st until piece measures 10½" (27 cm) from beginning end by working a right side row.
Repeat Garter Ridge Row 5 times.
Continue even in St st until piece measures 19" (48 cm) from beginning, end by working a right side row.
Repeat Garter Ridge Row 3 times. Bind off.
Finishing
Collar
Lay piece out flat and measure across top bound off edge 16" (41 cm) from each side toward center, placing markers. With right side facing, pick up and k 52 sts between markers for neck edge.
Row 1 (Right side)(wrong side of garment): K1, p1, knit to last 2 sts, p1, k1. Repeat Row 1 four times more.
Next Row (Wrong side): K1, p1, begin St st with a purl row and work to last 2 sts, p1, k1.
Keeping first and last 2 sts in pattern as established, continue even in St st until collar measures 3" (7.5 cm) from beginning end by working a right side row.
Next Row (Garter Ridge): K1, p1, knit to last 2 sts, p1, k1.
Continue even in St st until piece measures 6" (15 cm) from beginning end by working a right side row.
Repeat Garter Ridge Row 2 times.
Next Row: K1, p1, purl to last 2 sts, p1, k1.
Repeat Garter Ridge Row 5 times. Bind off. Weave in yarn ends.

I really like the look of this pattern and the collar. It is a nice additional detail that also adds a bit of warmth. I know when I make it I will have friends who will want one as well.
