When I first saw the photo I thought it was made of finger knitted, or possibly crocheted, I-cord. I'm not sure I'd have the patience to do it with double pointed needles! There are also I-cord makers (knitting spool or corker) that I would be tempted to use. Looks like a cute holiday decoration!

I say make it bigger and turn it into a trivet to put hot dishes or pans on the table at dinner time.. It's lovely!!

I'd be more likely to turn this into an ornament or garland. I have a paranoia about setting cups on uneven surfaces.
