Intermediate

Knitting Needle Size6 or 4 mm, 7 or 4.5 mm, 8 or 5 mm, Double-Pointed Knitting Needles (DPNs)

Yarn Weight(4) Medium Weight/Worsted Weight and Aran (16-20 stitches to 4 inches)

Gauge1 stitches, 2 rows, 3 inches. stockinette stitch

Materials:

  • Classic Wool Worsted (100 g/3.5 oz;192 m/210 yds)
  • Main Color (MC) Natural Mix (00229) - 1 ball
  • Contrast A Taupe (00227) - 1 ball
  • Contrast B Yellow (77615) - 1 ball
  • Contrast C Pretty in Pink (77416) - 1 ball
  • Set of four sizes U.S. 6 (4 mm), U.S. 7 (4.5 mm) and U.S. 8 (5 mm) double-pointed knitting needles or size needed to obtain gauge
  • Stitch marker

 

GAUGE

20 sts and 26 rows = 4" [10 cm] with U.S. 7 (4.5 mm) needles in stocking st

 

MEASUREMENTS

One size to fit average adult’s head.

ssk = Slip next 2 stitches knitwise one at a time. Pass them back onto left-hand needle, then knit through back loops together.
st(s) = stitch(es)
WS = wrong side

 

INSTRUCTIONS


Note: When working from chart, carry color not in use loosely across WS of work, but never more than 5 sts. When it must pass over more than 5 sts, weave it over and under the color in use at center point of sts it passes over.

 

With MC and set of four U.S. 6 (4 mm) double-pointed needles, cast on 96 sts. Divide sts evenly onto 3 needles (32, 32, 32). Join in rnd, placing marker on first st.
1st rnd: *K2. P2. Rep from * around.
Rep last rnd (K2. P2) ribbing until work from beg measures 6" [15 cm].
Change to U.S. 7 (4.5 mm) needles.
Knit 1 rnd even.
With A, knit 1 rnd.
With B, knit 2 rnds.
With A, knit 1 rnd.
With C, knit 1 rnd.
Change to U.S. 8 (5 mm) needles and knit 9 rnds of Chart, reading rnds from right to left, noting 24-st rep will be worked 4 times.

 

Change to U.S. 7 (4.5 mm) needles.
With C, knit 1 rnd.
With A, knit 1 rnd.
With B, knit 2 rnds.
With A, knit 1 rnd.
Break A, B and C.
With MC, knit 1 rnd.

 

Shape top: 1st rnd: *K2tog. K20. ssk. Rep from * around. 88 sts.
2nd and alt rnds: Knit.
3rd rnd: *K2tog. K18. ssk. Rep from * around. 80 sts.
5th rnd: *K2tog. K16. ssk. Rep from * around. 72 sts.
7th rnd: *K2tog. K14. ssk. Rep from * around. 64 sts.
9th rnd: *K2tog. K12. ssk. Rep from * around. 56 sts.
11th rnd: *K2tog. K10. ssk. Rep from * around. 48 sts.
13th rnd: *K2tog. K8. ssk. Rep from * around. 40 sts.
15th rnd: *K2tog. K6. ssk. Rep from * around. 32 sts.
17th rnd: *K2tog. K4. ssk. Rep from * around. 24 sts.
19th rnd: *K2tog. K2. ssk. Rep from * around. 16 sts.
Break yarn leaving, a long end. Thread end through rem 16 sts. Draw up and fasten securely.

 

Pompom: Holding 1 strand each of A, B and C tog, wind yarn around 4 fingers approx 50 times. Remove from fingers and tie tightly in center. Cut through each side of loops. Trim to a smooth round shape. Sew pompom to top of hat.
